How the quality slider affects the result
JPG quality is a percentage of how much source detail the encoder keeps. At 0.9 you get a file that looks identical to the original at 100% zoom while cutting file size by 60–80% — the sensible default. At 0.75 the file gets smaller still and the difference is only visible on close inspection. Below 0.6, blocking and mosquito-noise artefacts appear around high-contrast edges and the file shrinks by over 90%. The encoder discards detail permanently, so once artefacts are in, converting again cannot recover them.
